Sports Cards: Realizing your old Panini stickers might be worth something

Since I was a child, I've been collecting Panini soccer/football stickers and other sports cards (by the way – I don't care about the 'correct' terminology, if soccer or football. For the sake of simplicity, I'll continue with soccer).

One day I saw a video of American entrepreneur Gary Vaynerchuk talking about basketball and baseball cards, that he sees many dads who collected in their youth now teaching their kids and that he thinks it's going to blow up.

I think he drew a lot of eyeballs to the hobby and also asked myself that if has a point with basketball and baseball, there must be something for the world's biggest sport – soccer – in sports cards as well.

And I wasn't wrong! I learned that the stickers I used to collect as a child are now mostly cards, but the same brands (mostly Panini & Topps) still exist and produce the most popular sets.

Moreover, there are even entire companies that dedicate themselves to analyzing a card's condition, giving it a score and putting it in a robust holder. You call that grading and the most known companies are PSA, BGS and SGC.

Of course, this opens a whole market. Haunting the best graded cards for your collection, trading with others, looking up eBay for a bargain – you name it.

Ever since I understood all of these dynamics, I've been back to stickers & sports cards. I think it's a fascinating world that has a lot of potential for tons of fun, feeling like a child again and even making some profit.

A new era: Fantasy football games like Sorare offer NFT-based virtual sports cards with utility

In 2020, I read about a new kid on the block. It's called Sorare and is a fantasy football game, where players buy, sell, trade, and manage a virtual team with digital player cards.

The game uses blockchain technology based on Ethereum and their cards are so called non-fungible tokens (NFTs) that are said to ensure you personal ownership, a differentiator from in-game assets such as the digital cards you might now from FIFA Ultimate Team.

I admit that at first, I didn't understand. I even created an account and wanted to see and feel the game for myself, but the high prices for these apparently digital images of players spooked me off.

Quite some time later, I really wanted to understand how NFTs actually work since most people have such bad feelings about them. Then, I tried Sorare again and finally got it. Sorare is not just digital sports cards, these cards have a utility, which makes Sorare a game.

Each game week, I can play the cards/players I own in a 5-a-side team and they earn points based on their real life performances. With those points, you can now earn rewards (new cards or Ether Tokens, a.k.a. ETH), and those can be very attractive.

While the trading volume on Sorare meanwhile jumped from $90k to $307m (no joke), it reminded me more and more of the good old Football Manager or Comunio days. A fantasy football game that combines sports cards with a new groundbreaking technology.

If you want to get started with sports cards yourself, here are 3 ways I can help you build a side income with it.
